Process science and technology
We study data from real-world activities like business operations to identify, understand and improve processes.
Our primary research areas are Process mining, Business process management, and Process querying.
Our research finds a natural home in manufacturing, finance, retail, healthcare and anywhere where there is process-related business data. Organisations often fail to use their own process-related data to make strategic and evidence-based decisions. We look into ways to unlock this rich source of existing information and transform the ways organisations work.
The data is already there – why not use it?
Process Mining
We’re interested in tackling how organisations discover, monitor, and improve their business processes.
Organisations collect immense amounts of data during daily operations. Using Process mining, we can build models that help you understand what is actually happening based on your data – allowing you to learn what you do well, explore areas where you are not performing as expected, and identify areas that can be targeted for improvement.
We work using techniques drawn from multiple disciplines, including studies of inferences from data in data mining, and machine learning with process modelling and analysis.
Business process management
A business process is a set of activities and decisions performed by humans and machines to achieve a goal. The Business process management (BPM) discipline studies methods, techniques, and tools for modelling, analysing, automating, executing, monitoring, and improving business processes at organisations.
In our research, we are interested in designing new methods for managing unstructured and flexible business processes.
Process querying
We design and implement ways to automatically make meaning out of the vast amounts of process-related data generated in your business. Process querying combines concepts from Big Data, process modelling, and analysis with business process intelligence and process analytics.
We study techniques for retrieving and analysing models of real-world and envisioned processes. We organise and extract process-related information for systematic use and create models to describe how these processes should be carried out.
